Who is Eligible for the SASSA Child Support Grant in 2025?

To qualify for the program, you must be the main person looking after the child. This can be a parent, foster parent, grandparent, or even a child over 16 who looks after the household.

If you are not the child’s parent, you have to prove that you are the one caring for the child. You can do this by showing an affidavit from the police, a letter from the child’s biological parent, a note from the school principal, or a report from a social worker.

1. The primary caregiver is required to be a South African citizen or resident.
2. The child is required to be under 18 years old.
3. The child should not be staying in a government facility.
4. The child should be living with the main caregiver. 
5. You should not be getting any other money or support to look after the child.
6. You and the child must both live in South Africa.

You can only claim this grant for up to 6 children who are not your own by birth or legal adoption.

Income Limits for Getting the Child Support Grant

1. If you are single, you need to make less than R52,800 a year to qualify for this grant. That means your total money earned in one year should not go over that amount. 
2. However, if you are married, then the total income between you and your spouse has to be less than R105,600 in a year. 

So, both of you together can not make more than that to be able to get the grant. These income limits are there to make sure that the grant goes to people who really need the help to take care of their children.

Update on the R560 SASSA Child Support Grant in 2025
